Hierarchy in Taekwon-Do
Taekwon-Do practitioners follow certain hierarchy system which represents
level of advancement.
It is indicated by the colour of the belt (white, yellow, green, blue, red and
black).
There are 10 grades (10- the lowest and 1-the highest) for colour belts and 9
degrees (1.-the lowest and 9. the highest) for black belt holders.
Grading tests for colour belts are held usually twice a year. Dependent on
involvement and amount of work put in to the training, it takes about 4 years to
achieve black belt level which must be recognized by the International
Taekwon-Do Federation.
Black belt holders are called according to their degree:
• Boosabum Nim (Assistant Instructor) 1.-3. dan
• Sabum Nim (Instructor) 4.-6. dan
• Sahyun Nim (Master) 7.-8. dan
• Sasung Nim (Grand Master) 9. dan
Seniority among practitioners is established according to grade or degree. If
two members hold the same degree, seniority will be established according to the
following rule:
a) The date on the grade or degree certificate determines seniority;
b) If two members hold the same grade or degree and their certificates were
issued on the same date, the one who started practicing Taekwon-Do earlier will
be considered
c) If the above criteria are not decisive, the person with the earlier date of
birth will be considered to be senior.
Hierarchy in Taekwon-Do follows by certain etiquette and respect. The student
owes respect, loyalty, and gratitude to his teacher all times because of the
teaching and guidance he has received. Therefore, as the student progresses to
higher levels in ITF Taekwon-Do, he continues to work in affiliation with his
teacher.
